A dream without the cross
Christ has collapsed
leaning on the wall
I tried to lift him
I wanted to straighten
his twisted limbs
to fix his broken joints
but his head fell to one side
and wobbled
his neck folded
only his long spine held him
as he slid down along the wall
I pushed him against it
but he kept sliding
slowly further
there were no cracks or wedges
that would give support
no trees or grass to grasp
I became a tree trunk
but he twisted around it
missed me
and went down
if only I had found nails in time
