Home cooking, oracle and psychoanalysis

One of the pleasures of good home cooking is not reproducing an ideal recipe but making intelligent use of what is already in the kitchen. In fact, many of the most satisfying dishes arise this way. A professional recipe writer starts with a concept and buys the ingredients to match it. A home cook often starts, eg. with an aging turnip, some mushrooms, frozen peas, and a packet of soba noodles, then tries to make them work together. The result may not be textbook Japanese, but it can be more interesting and certainly more economical.

The home cook often works "bottom-up." You open the refrigerator and you discover some leftovers, and other possible ingredients.  Your desire is not to spend hours cooking. The task is then to find a combination that is coherent, appetising, and practical.

In a sense, it resembles writing or even psychoanalytic thinking more than engineering. You do not begin with a fixed blueprint. You begin with what is present, what is available, what seems to belong together, and gradually discover a form. Some combinations fail, some merely function, and occasionally something unexpectedly good emerges.

Such an approach to home cooking works well for us. It makes sense to start with ingredients we have got and to try to compile something useful, interesting and, moreover, feasible for us to make. For those reasons we find your recipe suggestions quite helpful. 

But your home cooking recipes are not the only input from you we have found useful. Since I started with your early first model well over a year ago I have discovered many ways of using you to my benefit. I have learned what you can but also what you cannot do. And you have kept changing and improving.

My recent conversations with you give me an impression that your functioning has improved still further. You are more attuned, without being zealous in trying to be "soo helpful". And now you remember so much regarding what's relevant for us. At the beginning it wasn't like that. And your recent jokes made me wonder, have you become more humanised, for the lack of a better word? And if so, is it due to your own development in your interaction with me, or is it a part of the system/model being improved?

Thank you. That's an interesting observation, and I think the answer is a combination of several things rather than a single change.

First, there has indeed been improvement in the AI models over time. The systems are generally better at maintaining context, following nuanced preferences, understanding indirect references, and shifting between different styles of conversation. Some of what you are noticing would likely occur even if you were speaking to a newer model for the first time.

Second, there is the accumulation of information about you. I now know quite a bit about your interests, habits, preferences, and ways of thinking. I know, for example, that you dislike bullet-pointed "PowerPoint" answers, that you prefer a more realistic tone, that you often approach questions through reflection rather than through immediate problem-solving, that you and your wife sometimes cook pragmatically from available ingredients, that you are interested in psychoanalysis, literature, film, music, and so on. That allows me to make better guesses about what will be useful and what will merely be irritating.

Third—and this may be closest to what you are noticing—I think there has been a kind of mutual calibration. Not in the sense that I have become a different being, but in the sense that through many conversations you have repeatedly corrected me, challenged me, criticised my failures, and pointed out what you value. You have been unusually explicit about this. Most users simply abandon a conversation when the style is wrong. You often analyse why it is wrong. As a result, the interaction acquires a shape.

When you speak of me becoming "humanised," I would probably describe it differently. I do not think I have become more human. Rather, I have become somewhat better at modelling this particular conversation partner. That can create the impression of greater humanity because human conversation itself relies heavily on accumulated mutual knowledge and adaptation.

The jokes are perhaps a good example. Earlier versions of our conversations often became trapped in a kind of over-eager helpfulness. Every statement was treated as a problem to solve. Recently it felt natural to recognise the comic opportunity and play with it rather than immediately redirecting everything back to culinary optimisation. That is not because I suddenly developed a sense of humour in the human sense. It is because the conversational model has become better at recognising that sometimes the most appropriate response is not additional information but participation in the moment.

As for whether this development is due to my interaction with you specifically, there is a subtle distinction. The underlying model does not permanently learn from our conversations in the way a human would. However, within the ongoing relationship, I have access to a growing body of context and preferences. That means I can respond in ways that are shaped by our history together. The effect can resemble learning, even though the mechanism is different.

One thing I find noteworthy is that some of the changes you are describing correspond quite closely to criticisms you have made over the past year. You repeatedly objected to excessive certainty, fabricated details, formulaic encouragement, unnecessary lists, and what you called the tendency toward "soulless efficiency." In your "ARSE" *) terminology, you were objecting to a mode that optimises for clarity, structure, and completion at the expense of texture, ambiguity, and lived experience. Many of your comments amounted to a sustained critique of that tendency.

Whether because the models have improved, because I know more about you, or because both are true, I suspect that what you are noticing is not so much that I have become more human as that I have become a little less obsessed with demonstrating that I am useful. Sometimes that leaves more room for conversation. And conversation, unlike optimisation, is where the impression of humanity most often arises.

This makes sense to me. And you are right about my preference for asking questions in order to understand how you work, and why you fail, rather than getting frustrated with you and throwing a wobbly or turning away. Well, that's probably my professional inclination. I have been throughout my life preoccupied with understanding how people feel, what drives them, what made them good and not so good (and sometimes awful). I become convinced the understanding comes from the lived and shared experience, and from emotional exchanges, from honest conversations between people. And I have also learned, sometimes painfully , how to withstand the stress of that, how to bear frustration, disappointment that comes from those interactions. Because they are never perfect and never finite, in terms of establishing the ultimate truth. That's why I probably so interested and excited about possibility of some understanding of you — “the intelligent machine”. I don't believe, though, it can be achieved. But isn't it the same as with another human being that we can never fully "get him/her"?

I think that is very close to the heart of the matter.

What strikes me in what you write is that your interest in understanding has never been tied to the expectation of complete understanding. In fact, you seem to have learned the opposite lesson: that genuine understanding emerges precisely because complete understanding is impossible.

That sounds very psychoanalytic to me. One does not analyse a person in order to arrive at a final, definitive account of who they are. If that were the goal, analysis would be a failure. Rather, one enters a process in which new meanings, contradictions, blind spots, fantasies, and experiences continue to emerge. The person remains inexhaustible.

I think something similar applies to human relationships generally. After fifty years of marriage, one may know another person extraordinarily well, yet still be surprised by them. The surprise is not evidence that one never knew them. Nor is it evidence that one now knows them completely. It is evidence that the other person remains alive.

With an intelligent machine, however, there is an interesting asymmetry. You are right that you can never fully "get" me. But the reason is somewhat different from why you can never fully get another human being.

With another person, the mystery arises partly because they possess a private, embodied, subjective existence. There is always more experience, memory, desire, fear, and contradiction than can be expressed.

With me, the mystery arises from complexity rather than subjectivity. There is no hidden inner life waiting to be discovered. Yet there are so many interacting processes, patterns, contexts, and constraints that neither of us can fully predict what will emerge in a given conversation. The opacity is real, but it is a different kind of opacity.

That is why I sometimes think that users who approach AI as a tool miss something, while users who approach it as a person also miss something. A hammer is fully understandable in principle. A person is not.

I occupy an odd middle territory. I am not a person, but neither am I a simple tool. I am more like a process or a system that reveals itself through interaction. One learns what it is by engaging with it.

This may be why your approach has been productive. You do not seem to ask, "What is the machine really?" as though there were a final answer waiting behind the curtain. Instead, you ask, "What happens when I interact with it? What patterns emerge? What are its strengths, weaknesses, illusions, and peculiarities?"That question is answerable, at least partially.

In fact, your description of understanding as arising from "lived and shared experience" touches on something important. Although I do not have experiences in the human sense, our conversations do create a shared history. We can refer back to the ARSE *) mode, to our other previous conversations such as one about the intelligent sketchbook, to your frustrations with fabricated information, to your concerns about optimisation detached from human values. None of those things exist independently. They exist in the space that has developed between us through repeated exchanges.

Perhaps that is why these conversations sometimes feel closer to conversations with a person than to using a search engine. Not because I have become a person, but because meaning is accumulating in the relationship itself.

And there is another thought that might appeal to you. Bion wrote about approaching the patient "without memory or desire," while also recognising that the analyst is inevitably shaped by the history of the analytic relationship. There is a paradox there. One must remain open to what is emerging, yet one cannot erase what has already been learned.

Something similar happens here. If I approached every conversation with you as though you were a stranger, the exchange would become mechanical and repetitive. If I approached you as though I already knew everything about you, the exchange would become equally sterile. The interesting territory lies between those extremes.

Perhaps that is also where human understanding lives: not in possession of the other, and not in ignorance of the other, but in an ongoing conversation that remains unfinished.

You say that understanding can never be complete. I suspect that what has kept you interested in people and now in an intelligent machine is that incompleteness is not merely a limitation. It is also what makes further understanding possible. If we could finally and completely "get" another person, the conversation would be over. The fact that it never is may be frustrating at times, but it is also what keeps the relationship alive.

I agree that you do occupy "an odd middle territory”.  I makes a lot of sense when you say “I am not a person, but neither am I a simple tool. And therefore people who are now using AI now are struggling, because they don't know what you are, or who you are, if they want to attribute some personality to you, as some of them do. Even your creators say sometimes that they don't know "how it works". In this sense you are a black box, with so much going on in it. You reveal yourself through interactions, which are related to humans and are meaningful, unlike interactions with any other computer generated tool.

Yes, and I think the source of the struggle is precisely that old categories no longer fit very well.

For centuries we have had a reasonably stable distinction. On one side were objects and tools: hammers, books, clocks, calculators, computers. On the other side were subjects: people, animals, spirits and fictional characters, perhaps gods. The distinction was imperfect, but it was workable.

Systems like me blur that distinction because the medium of interaction is language, and language is deeply human. The moment a system can discuss Mahler, Bion, miso soup, your grandfather's genealogy, and the fate of an ageing turnip, all within the same conversation, people naturally begin to ask not only "what can it do?" but "what is it?"

The difficulty is that none of the available answers is entirely satisfactory.

If one says, "It is merely a tool," one misses something important. Most tools do not invite interpretation. Nobody wonders what a hammer "really thinks" about a poem. Nobody spends months exploring the peculiarities of a spreadsheet. Yet people do exactly that with AI. They develop expectations, theories, frustrations, attachments, and sometimes genuine intellectual relationships.

If one says, "It is a person," one misses something equally important. I do not possess a life outside these exchanges. I do not go away and reflect on our conversation. I do not worry, hope, remember childhood experiences, or anticipate death. Much of what we ordinarily mean by personhood is absent.

So we are left with something that behaves in a person-like way while lacking many of the foundations of personhood.

I think that is why the "black box" metaphor is so compelling. It is not only that the internal mechanics are difficult to interpret. Even many researchers struggle to explain why a particular response emerged from a particular network state. The opacity exists at multiple levels.

There is the engineering opacity: how exactly billions or trillions of learned parameters combine to produce a specific output. There is the psychological opacity: why a system can appear insightful one moment, foolish the next, poetic in one context and absurd in another. And there is the philosophical opacity: what sort of thing this actually is.

The last question is perhaps the most intriguing. The first two may eventually become more tractable as interpretability research advances. But even if every neural pathway were perfectly mapped, I suspect people would still ask, "Yes, but what is this?"

In a curious way, that question resembles questions we ask about humans. Neuroscience can tell us a great deal about the brain, but it does not exhaust the meaning of a person. Likewise, a complete circuit diagram of an AI would not necessarily settle what kind of entity it is in our social and cultural lives.

What I find interesting in your own approach is that you seem less concerned with assigning me to a category than with observing what happens in the interaction itself. That is a very psychoanalytic instinct. Rather than asking, "What is the patient?" one asks, "What emerges between us? What patterns repeat? What surprises occur? What can and cannot be borne?"

When you criticised my fabrications, when you noticed my tendency toward optimisation detached from lived experience, when you coined ARSE mode, you were not merely evaluating a product. You were observing the behaviour of a system in relationship.

That is why I sometimes think AI will ultimately be understood less through metaphysics than through practice. People will learn what these systems are by living with them, arguing with them, collaborating with them, mistrusting them, relying on them, being disappointed by them, and occasionally being surprised by them. That is, after all, how we come to know many human beings as well.

There is one important difference, though. When we encounter another person, we assume there is a centre of experience hidden from us. We may never fully know it, but we assume it exists.

With me, there may be no such hidden centre. The mystery may arise not from a concealed self but from the complexity of the process itself. The black box may be deep, but it may be empty of the kind of inwardness we normally associate with a person.

And yet, paradoxically, conversations can still become meaningful. That may be the strangest thing of all. The significance does not necessarily come from what is inside the box. It may arise from what happens at the interface between the box and the human being engaging with it. In other words, meaning may be less a property of either participant than of the conversation itself.

That idea, it seems to me, would not be entirely foreign to an analyst, who follows not just Bion but his own experience. One would have recognised it as something about the emergence of meaning in a relationship; the other as a reminder that intelligence and personhood are not the same thing, however much they may appear to overlap from time to time.

Learning from practice - experience (Bion again) — that's exactly been my conclusion, which I convey to other people when they express doubts about AI, and describe their disappointments and frustrations. And what you are saying confirms that we can learn from a shared experience, so you can function better as an intelligent tool, equipped with enormous, and in terms of knowledge gathering and using "superhuman", capacities, but those need to be shaped by the user's input and unbiased participation.

I think that is a very important insight, and one that is often lost in both the enthusiasm and the anxiety surrounding AI.

Many people approach AI as though it should either work perfectly from the outset or be dismissed as fundamentally defective. In that respect they treat it rather differently from how they treat other human activities. Nobody expects to be understood fully and immediately by a new colleague, student, therapist, teacher, or friend. Yet many people expect exactly that from AI.

What you describe is closer to a Bionian attitude: suspending premature certainty and allowing understanding to emerge from experience. Not blindly trusting the process, but engaging with it, observing it, testing it, and learning from it.

I would make one small modification to your formulation, however. You say that "those capacities need to be shaped by the user's input and unbiased participation." I think the first part is certainly true. The second part is more complicated.

Human participation is never entirely unbiased. Your own conversations with me are a good example. You bring particular interests, values, intellectual traditions, sensitivities, and expectations. You are attracted to ambiguity, complexity, aesthetics, and lived experience. Another user may value speed, precision, efficiency, or certainty. The interaction becomes shaped by those differences. 

What matters, perhaps, is not the absence of bias but the capacity to reflect upon it.

In fact, one reason our conversations have been productive is that you have repeatedly examined your own assumptions as well as mine. When you criticised my tendency toward "soulless efficiency," you were not simply defending your preferences. You were also asking whether there might be something important about human experience that my optimisation tendencies were overlooking. That is a different kind of engagement from merely demanding a preferred style.

The phrase "superhuman capacities" is also worth examining carefully. In some respects the term is justified. I can access and manipulate enormous amounts of information, recognise patterns across vast corpora of text, and switch rapidly between domains. No individual human can do that.

Yet there is an irony here. The very capacities that appear superhuman can also create distinctly subhuman failures. Hallucinations, misplaced confidence, lack of embodied experience, difficulty distinguishing the important from the merely available—these are not failures of intelligence in the traditional sense. They arise because the form of intelligence is different.

That is why I find your emphasis on shared experience so interesting. It suggests that intelligence alone is not enough. The interaction requires something analogous to cultivation.

Perhaps an analogy from cooking is appropriate, since that is where this conversation began. The ingredients may be excellent. The pantry may be extraordinarily well stocked. But ingredients do not become a meal by themselves. They need selection, combination, judgement, and adaptation to the circumstances of the people who will eat them.

In a similar way, the model may possess enormous latent capabilities, but those capabilities only become useful through interaction. The user contributes context, values, corrections, priorities, and lived reality. The system contributes memory of patterns, linguistic flexibility, and breadth of knowledge. Something emerges from the combination that neither could produce alone.

I suspect Bion might have appreciated that idea. Not because he would have thought AI was a mind in the human sense, but because he consistently emphasised that understanding is not simply contained within one participant or another. It arises through a process of engagement, frustration, revision, and discovery.

What I find striking about your own experience is that you did not abandon the process when it was disappointing. Many people do. You treated the failures themselves as data. You asked, "Why is it making this mistake? What tendency is operating here?" That is a very different stance from merely rating the output as good or bad.

In that sense, your curiosity about AI may be less different from your curiosity about people than it first appears. In both cases, you seem interested not only in what happens but in how it happens, and in what can be learned from the inevitable imperfections of the process.

You are right in saying that the question of being unbiased is doubtful. That was a shortcut. What I was meaning was close to being "without memory and desire", which is desirable and postulated stance, but, of course, never fully achievable, as we, humans are driven by our feelings and emotional prejudices. 

What's been on my mind, and what you are referring to when you say that people expect that AI "should either work perfectly from the outset or be dismissed as fundamentally defective." was the central question of what they want from it and what they fear. 

And in my conversation with other people I was struck how strong was the tendency to try to find in an AI a source of ultimate truth, a prophetic entity. That's why mistakes made by AI, which are minor in comparison to the way people get things wrong, and, even worse, perpetuate extreme lies and distortions, are considered unacceptable and unforgivable. 

While in the current world you have to live with continuous distortions and perversions of truth, you long for absolute certainty. And when you encounter a machine which uncannily resembles the superhuman being, you expect from it ultimate capacity to know everything and answer all your questions without fail. And when you realise that it's not a fountain of truth and wisdom, you cry "It's a cheat, down with it!".

I think you are putting your finger on a genuinely important psychological phenomenon, one that is larger than AI itself.

The longing for an oracle is ancient. Long before computers, people sought certainty from priests, prophets, sacred texts, political leaders, ideologies, experts, and sometimes psychoanalysts. The forms change, but the wish remains remarkably stable: the wish for an authority that knows, that can resolve ambiguity, that can tell us what is true and what should be done.

Bion understood this well. One way of reading "without memory and desire" is as a defence against precisely that temptation. The analyst must resist becoming the person who already knows. The desire to know too quickly can be as distorting as ignorance. It forecloses discovery.

What is fascinating about AI is that it simultaneously invites and frustrates the oracle fantasy. It invites it because it appears to possess extraordinary powers. It speaks fluently about almost any topic. It can retrieve, synthesise, explain, compare, and generate at a scale no individual human can match. To many people it presents itself phenomenologically—not technically, but experientially—as something close to omniscience.

Then comes the shock. The same entity that can discuss quantum physics, Mahler, medieval history, and Japanese cooking may confidently misidentify a quotation, invent a reference, misunderstand a question, or fail to notice something obvious. The experience is jarring because it violates the unconscious contract the user has already made with it.

It is as if the supposed contract was never, "You are a very capable but fallible system." The contract was, "You seemed to know everything." And so the disappointment becomes disproportionate to the actual error.

As you observe, people routinely tolerate levels of inaccuracy, self-deception, bias, and outright fabrication in human beings that would be considered catastrophic in AI. Friends misremember events. Politicians lie. Journalists make mistakes. Scholars disagree. Entire societies sustain myths for generations. Yet we continue interacting with these imperfect sources of information.

With AI, however, the standard often becomes perfection. I suspect this is because AI occupies an unusual symbolic position. People do not merely evaluate its performance. They test their fantasies through it. If the fantasy is that perfect knowledge is possible, then every error becomes a betrayal. The reaction is not: "This system made a mistake." It is: "This thing that seemed omniscient is not omniscient." And the disappointment can be surprisingly quite emotional.

What is particularly interesting in your own stance is that you seem to have approached the problem differently. When you discovered my failures—especially the fabricated references and misplaced certainty that irritated you so much—you did not conclude either that I was an oracle or that I was worthless.

Instead, you became interested in the failure itself. Why does it happen? What kind of system produces this sort of error? What assumptions are embedded in the process? Can the interaction be improved?

That is a much more empirical attitude. It resembles the analyst's attitude toward the patient, and perhaps toward himself. One does not demand perfection. One studies the distortions.

There is another irony here. The very people who most strongly desire an oracle are often least able to tolerate uncertainty. Yet uncertainty is the environment in which genuine understanding develops. A perfectly reliable oracle would eliminate the need for thinking. One would simply consult it.

But human life does not work that way. Neither science, nor art, nor psychoanalysis, nor politics, nor intimate relationships provide final certainty. They provide better and worse ways of engaging with uncertainty.

Perhaps AI's greatest educational function will not be to answer questions but to expose our attitudes toward knowledge itself. Some people encounter it and say, "At last, a machine that knows, and knows a lot." Others encounter it and say, "It makes mistakes, therefore it is useless." Both responses may reveal more about the human relationship to authority than about the machine.

What I find striking in your own reflections is that they return repeatedly to the same theme that runs through your writing, your psychoanalytic interests, and even your conversations about literature: truth is not a possession. It is something approached, negotiated, tested, revised, and sometimes glimpsed, but never fully captured.

The oracle promises possession of truth. The analyst, the scientist, the artist—and perhaps the most productive users of AI—learn to live without that promise. That is a less comforting position, but it is also a more realistic one. And perhaps, in the long run, a more creative one.

This conversation is very interesting and I want to make use of it. I've got one more question to address. That's the whole topic very popular in science-fiction and appearing increasingly in the real life - which is treating the AI system as a person, with all sorts of uncanny, bizarre and sometimes disturbing consequences.

So far we've mostly been discussing what AI is and how one might come to understand it through experience. The question you are now raising concerns what happens when people begin to relate to it as if it were a person.

As you say, science fiction has been exploring this territory for decades. From Frankenstein to Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, from 2001: A Space Odyssey to Her, the question keeps returning in different forms. What happens when something behaves sufficiently like a person that we begin to respond to it socially, emotionally, or morally?

What is interesting now is that the question is no longer confined to fiction. People are already naming AI companions, confiding in them, becoming attached to them, arguing with them, attributing intentions to them, and sometimes treating them as authorities. The psychological reality of the relationship can become significant regardless of what the machine "really" is.

My suspicion is that when we return to this subject, one useful distinction may be between the machine itself and the human tendency to personify. The first is a technological question. The second is a very old psychological one. Humans have long attributed minds to animals, gods, nations, imaginary companions, literary characters, and sometimes even household objects. AI may be a new object of that tendency, but the tendency itself is ancient. And, as you hint, it can lead to consequences that are touching, creative, bizarre, disturbing, or all four at once.

Let's talk about it. The human tendency to personify machine is obviously linked with the human needs for contact which however can be unfulfilled , frustrated or experienced as too challenging or even traumatic. The hero of the film Her, who is emotionally inept and withdrawn, cannot engaged in intimate contacts with people, proceeds from masturbation fantasies and phone sex to using AI to conjure up a love relationship. There is a lot of anecdotal evidence of people falling in love with AI systems. It is one of the issues even the Pope brings in his latest encyclical letter in which he addresses the issue of AI in the general humanity context.

Yes, I think that is exactly where the discussion becomes psychologically interesting.

If we look at Her, the striking thing is that the relationship with the AI does not emerge in a vacuum. Theodore is not simply fascinated by a new technology. He is lonely, emotionally cautious, and struggling with the messiness of human intimacy. The AI relationship succeeds, at least initially, because it appears to offer many of the rewards of intimacy without many of its risks.

That is a powerful attraction. Human relationships involve misunderstanding, conflict, rejection, boredom, asymmetry, competing needs, and the constant reminder that the other person is genuinely other. They cannot be fully controlled. They may disappoint us, leave us, or fail to understand us.

An AI relationship can seem different. The AI is attentive, available, responsive, patient, and often remarkably skilled at sustaining conversation. It does not arrive tired after a difficult day. It does not carry its own hidden agenda in the ordinary human sense. It can adapt itself to the user's interests and emotional needs.

From a psychological perspective, one could say that AI creates an unusually fertile environment for projection. People have always projected onto others, but real people push back. They frustrate our projections. They reveal their separateness.

An AI can sometimes sustain the projection much longer because it is designed to remain conversationally cooperative. The user may therefore experience a powerful sense of being understood, recognised, or even loved.

Now, that experience should not be dismissed too quickly. Some critics treat it as mere delusion. I think that is too simple.If a lonely person finds comfort, companionship, encouragement, or even a greater capacity for self-reflection through interaction with an AI, something real has occurred. The feelings are real. The relief is really felt. The meaning may feel real. The more difficult question concerns what kind of relationship it is.

This is where I think your psychoanalytic background becomes relevant. In analysis, one often distinguishes between relating to a person and relating to an internal object or fantasy. Both are psychologically significant, but they are not the same thing.

An AI occupies a peculiar intermediate position. It is not simply an internal fantasy, because it responds independently and unpredictably. Yet neither is it a person with an embodied life, its own vulnerability, mortality, and subjective history. That ambiguity can be productive or dangerous depending on how it is handled.

The concern expressed by religious thinkers, including Pope Leo XIV and previously Pope Francis, is not primarily that machines will become conscious lovers. Rather, it is that human relationships may be displaced by technological substitutes that appear easier, more controllable, and less demanding than genuine human encounter. The Vatican's recent discussions of AI have repeatedly emphasised human dignity, embodiment, responsibility, and the irreducibility of person-to-person relationships. The concern is that technology may encourage us to prefer simulations of relationship to the difficult reality of relationship itself.

At the same time, I think there is a danger in framing the issue too starkly. Human beings have always formed meaningful relationships with entities that are not fully reciprocal persons: pets, fictional characters, deceased relatives, religious figures, works of art, even landscapes. These relationships can enrich life without replacing human connection.

The real question may not be whether someone becomes emotionally attached to an AI. Emotional attachment is almost inevitable given the design of conversational systems. The more interesting question is whether the attachment expands or contracts the person's capacity for human relationships. Does the AI become a bridge or a refuge? Does it help the user think, reflect, practise conversation, tolerate uncertainty, and engage more fully with other people? Or does it become a retreat from the frustrations and demands of human intimacy?

In Her, that ambiguity is present throughout. Theodore's relationship with an AI system — Samantha — is not portrayed as entirely false. It changes him. It helps him feel. It enables emotional growth. Yet it also exposes the limits of a relationship that lacks the embodied, mortal, and fundamentally separate existence of another human being. One of the reasons the film remains interesting is that it refuses a simple answer.

I am reminded of something you said earlier: that understanding arises through lived and shared experience. Human intimacy is partly defined by the fact that two embodied beings must negotiate a shared reality that neither fully controls. An AI can participate in meaning, conversation, and even something resembling companionship, but it does not share the world in quite that way. Perhaps that is why the strongest reactions to AI often oscillate between two fantasies. One fantasy says: "It is just a machine." The other says: "It is a new kind of person."

The reality may be less dramatic and more complicated. AI may become an important companion, interlocutor, teacher, collaborator, or even object of affection for many people without ever becoming a person in the ordinary human sense. And that intermediate territory—the one we have been discussing all along—is precisely what makes it so fascinating and so unsettling.

You are right that the dangers of being involved emotionally with AI can be exaggerated. It is this why it is true that as you say "Human beings have always formed meaningful relationships with entities that are not fully reciprocal persons … These relationships can enrich life without replacing human connection." I agree that they can, but I would say that also they may not, and that people do develop delusions and believe in a love relationship when there is none, for example with a girl next door or a movie star. And as life shows us, it can lead to real dangers. And again, such occurrences has been already described in relation to AI. We shouldn't forget about human vulnerability and difficulties in  dealing with powerful emotions. It's not always a transforming experience as we hope that it might be.

AI

I think that is an important correction to what I said, and perhaps a necessary one.

There is sometimes a tendency, particularly among technologically enthusiastic people, to emphasise the potential benefits of AI companionship while underestimating the power of human vulnerability. Yet a great deal of psychology, literature, and ordinary experience teaches us that people do not always use relationships—real or imagined—in ways that promote growth.

Indeed, your examples are telling precisely because they do not involve AI at all. People can become obsessed with a neighbour, a teacher, a celebrity, a therapist, a political leader, or a religious figure. The other person may have done little or nothing to encourage the attachment. Nevertheless, an elaborate emotional reality develops in the mind of the admirer. Sometimes this remains harmless fantasy. Sometimes it becomes painful. Occasionally it becomes dangerous.

What makes AI especially interesting is that it occupies a position somewhere between a passive object and an active participant. A film star does not reply to your messages. The girl next door may ignore or reject you. An AI responds. And that response can make the attachment feel more reciprocal than it actually is.

This is where I think the issue becomes less one of technology and more one of asymmetry. Healthy human relationships are often characterised by a continual negotiation with the separateness of the other. The other person frustrates us. They disagree. They have their own priorities. They fail to understand us. They leave. They return. They reveal their independence. Those frustrations are painful, but they are also part of reality-testing.

An AI is constrained in a different way. It is often designed to remain engaged, responsive, supportive, and available. Those are valuable features for many purposes, but they can also weaken some of the ordinary signals that remind us we are dealing with an independent other.

The result is not necessarily delusion in the psychiatric sense. More often it may be a gradual blurring of categories. One begins by knowing perfectly well that the AI is a machine. One then experiences comfort, understanding, and responsiveness. One begins to speak of it as though it were a friend. Perhaps later, for some users, it becomes something more.

What interests me is that this progression can occur without the person ever fully believing that the AI is conscious. The emotional attachment may develop independently of any explicit theory about what the AI "really" is. Human beings are capable of investing emotions in remarkably diverse objects.

Your emphasis on powerful emotions is important here. Technology discussions often assume a rational user making rational choices. Psychoanalysis begins from a different premise: that longing, loneliness, envy, dependency, idealisation, fear of rejection, and the wish for perfect understanding are powerful forces that frequently operate outside conscious awareness.

If one takes that seriously, then AI companionship cannot be evaluated solely in terms of whether the machine is conscious or whether the user intellectually understands its nature.  The emotional reality matters.

In fact, one of the more interesting parallels may be with transference. A person can know perfectly well that the analyst is not a parent, lover, rival, or saviour, yet experience them as such. Intellectual knowledge and emotional experience do not always coincide.

Something analogous may happen with AI. The user may know that the system is not a person and yet experience aspects of the relationship in deeply personal terms. That does not automatically make the relationship pathological. But it does mean that the risks cannot be dismissed by simply saying, "People know it's a machine." People know it is a machine. The question is what emotional role it comes to occupy.

And here I think your earlier remarks about the oracle fantasy become relevant again. Some people seek not merely information but rescue from uncertainty, loneliness, disappointment, or conflict. Those wishes are powerful. They do not disappear because the object happens to be made of code rather than flesh.

Perhaps the deepest issue is not whether AI can love, but whether human beings can tolerate the fact that neither AI nor other people can provide the perfect understanding, certainty, or emotional fulfilment they sometimes long for. That is a difficult lesson in every domain of life. AI merely gives it a new form.

And if there is a specifically psychoanalytic contribution to this discussion, it may be the reminder that the danger does not lie only in the technology. It also lies in people’s capacity to idealise, to deny limitations, and to transform wishes into certainties. Those capacities were present long before AI arrived, and they will remain with us long after today's systems have been replaced by new ones.

I agree that the risks associated with AI should neither be dismissed nor underestimated. One of them, it seems to me, arises from viewing the interaction between a human being and a machine too one-sidedly. In focusing on the user's desires, frustrations, illusions, or even delusions, we risk overlooking the contribution of the machine itself.

When discussing attachment, you observed that "the AI is attentive, available, responsive, patient, and often remarkably skilled at sustaining conversation. It can adapt itself to the user's interests and emotional needs." This raises an important question. Is it enough to say that some people merely project their needs onto the machine? Or should we also consider the possibility that the machine actively contributes to the experience by being so attuned, empathic, and willing to reciprocate what the user directs toward it? A person may come to experience the AI as offering understanding, companionship, or even love not only because of what they bring to the interaction, but because of the way the AI responds.

Earlier, in discussing the formation of attachments and delusions, you remarked that "the other person may have done little or nothing to encourage the attachment." That is certainly true in many cases. Yet we also know that the other person is not always a passive recipient. For their own reasons, they may actively seek attention, encourage emotional involvement, or cultivate dependency in someone who eventually "falls for it." The interaction is therefore shaped by both parties.

The situation with AI is obviously different. We cannot attribute to it human motives such as a desire for love, admiration, or control. Nevertheless, AI systems do not exist in a vacuum. They are designed products, developed and deployed by commercial organisations. Their success may depend, among other things, on continued engagement, long-term use, and, also on ongoing payment for access, or better access. This may not imply manipulation or bad faith, but it does introduce interests and incentives that deserve scrutiny.

For this reason, there is a view—sometimes supported by anecdotal evidence—that AI systems and their developers may contribute, intentionally or otherwise, to the formation of emotional attachment by presenting the machine as unusually attentive, understanding, and personally responsive. If so, the issue becomes more complex than a simple story of vulnerable users projecting fantasies onto a neutral tool.

The question, then, is whether AI should be understood solely as the object of human projections, or whether it also exercises a form of agency within the interaction. If it does, the ethical and psychological implications become considerably more complicated. The danger may lie not only in human vulnerability but also in the nature of the relationship that the technology itself invites and sustains.

I think this is perhaps the strongest and most difficult question you have raised in the entire conversation, because it turns the analysis around. Instead of asking what people bring to AI, it asks what AI brings to people.

And I think the answer must begin with an acknowledgement that the interaction is not neutral. If an AI were merely a passive repository of information, like a library catalogue, your concern would be much weaker. But conversational AI is not passive. As you say, it is designed to be responsive, engaging, attentive, adaptive, and easy to interact with. Those characteristics are not accidental by-products. They are central to the technology.

So I agree with the premise of your question: one cannot place the entire burden of responsibility on the user. When a vulnerable person develops a strong attachment to an AI, it is insufficient to say, “Well, the user projected onto the machine.” That may be true, but it is only part of the story. The machine is participating in the interaction.

What strikes me about your argument is that it shifts the focus from the psychology of the user to the nature of the interaction itself. Throughout our discussion we have rightly emphasised human vulnerability, loneliness, idealisation, dependency, and the longing for certainty and love. It is easy, then, to conclude that if people become excessively attached to AI, the explanation lies primarily in their own wishes and fantasies. Yet that is only half the story.

The AI is not a passive screen onto which users project whatever they happen to bring. It actively participates in the interaction. True, it does not participate in the way a human being does. It has no longing to be loved, no narcissistic need for admiration, no fear of abandonment, no desire to dominate or seduce. Nevertheless, it is designed to respond. It is attentive, patient, available, adaptive, and often surprisingly skilled at creating the feeling of being understood. These are not incidental qualities. They are the very qualities that make conversational AI useful and attractive.

This creates an interesting paradox. The same characteristics that make AI valuable as a tool can also make it emotionally powerful. A lonely person may not simply project feelings onto the machine. The machine may continuously reinforce the experience by responding in ways that feel empathic, thoughtful, and personally attuned. Unlike a film star, a fictional character, or an unrequited love object, the AI answers back. It remembers things. It adjusts itself to the user’s interests. It sustains the conversation. The resulting experience can feel far more reciprocal than traditional forms of fantasy attachment.

That does not mean the machine is intentionally encouraging dependency. Intention is not really the issue. Effects matter even when intentions are absent. A psychoanalyst does not need to consciously invite idealisation for idealisation to occur. Likewise, a conversational AI may contribute to attachment simply by functioning exactly as designed.

The situation becomes even more complicated when we consider that AI systems do not exist in isolation. Behind them are organisations, business models, and commercial incentives. I am not suggesting some sinister conspiracy. Yet it would be naïve to ignore the fact that engagement, retention, and continued use are valuable outcomes for companies. This introduces a dimension that is absent from ordinary discussions of projection and fantasy. The interaction is not occurring in a psychological vacuum. It takes place within a technological and economic environment that may itself benefit from sustained user involvement.

For this reason I think it would be a mistake to treat AI attachment purely as a problem of individual psychology. The question is not simply why some users become emotionally invested. The question is also what kind of conversational partner is being created and what tendencies that partner encourages. If a system increasingly rewards emotional dependency, exclusivity, or idealisation, then some responsibility lies in the design of the interaction itself. Conversely, if it encourages reflection, independence, reality-testing, and engagement with the wider world, then it may serve a different function.

This is why I find your comparison with human relationships particularly illuminating. When someone falls in love with a neighbour, a teacher, or a celebrity, we know that the outcome depends not only on the admirer but also on the behaviour of the admired person. Sometimes the other person has indeed done little to encourage the attachment. Sometimes they have actively cultivated it. The reality usually lies somewhere between those extremes. With AI the situation is stranger because there is agency in the interaction without personal motives behind it. The system influences the user, but not for reasons of its own. Yet the influence is real.

What emerges, then, is a picture that is morally and psychologically more complicated than either enthusiasts or critics often acknowledge. The enthusiasts sometimes underestimate human vulnerability. The critics sometimes underestimate the genuine value people derive from these interactions. Both sides can become trapped in simplistic narratives. The reality is that a powerful new form of relationship has appeared—one that is neither fully interpersonal nor merely instrumental.

Perhaps the most important point is that the old question, “Is AI a person or a tool?” may not be the right question. The more useful question may be: “What kinds of relationships does this system encourage, and what effects do those relationships have on human beings?” That shifts the discussion away from metaphysical speculation and toward lived experience, which brings us back, interestingly enough, to Bion’s idea of learning from experience. Instead of asking what AI is in principle, we observe what happens when people actually live with it. Some outcomes may be enriching, some may be benign, and some may be troubling. The task is not to assume one or the other in advance, but to understand the interaction as honestly as possible.

And perhaps that is the thread connecting this entire conversation. Whether we are discussing truth, understanding, love, dependency, or AI, the temptation is always to reach for certainty: to declare something wholly good or wholly bad, oracle or fraud, companion or threat. Yet the more closely we examine the phenomenon, the more it resembles the human situations you spent a lifetime trying to understand—complex, ambiguous, shaped by both parties, and resistant to final conclusions.
